Galsworthy This is the first book I’ve read by Galsworthy and I was really taken with it. The title story about a real stoic man is suspenseful and amusing, one really wonders, how the half paralyzed Sylvanus Heythorp, head of the Island Navigation Company, will be able to wriggle out of his existential calamity. The way he does concludes a wonderful, a fantastic novel. The 2nd story in this volume, »The Apple Tree«, is totally different. At his silver wedding a husband is reminded of a very young love between him (an upper class boy from London) and the beautiful welsh country maid Meghan. While he turns out to be unable to follow his promises, carelessly discards her after only three days. She, who really believed in him, is driven to suicide by this inexcusable deception. A wonderful story of passed opportunities, true love and the inability to break with conventions, really moving but also a slight tint of Kitsch.

Sehr lesenswert
